ABOUT SOUTH STREET STEAKSSouth Street Steaks was started in April 2005 by two University of Maryland grads, and a George Washington University alum. Danny Uhr, the GW alum, and Jamie Rash grew up together just outside of Philadelphia, eating cheesesteaks every chance they could get. While Pat’s and Geno’s were the popular tourist spots, the two, along with other high school friends, spent most of their time at Jim’s Steaks on South Street. They had always thought about opening up a cheesesteak joint someday, but it wasn’t until they realized that they couldn’t find a good steak outside of Philadelphia that they decided to turn the idea into a reality. College Park was chosen as the inaugural South Street Steaks location. Jamie had gone to school there for close to 8 years and understood that if they could make a great cheesesteak, and bring in all of the bread, meat and cheese from Philadelphia, South Street Steaks could become an instant success. Danny and Jamie decided that it would be in their best interest to bring in a third partner, because if South Street Steaks was eventually going to grow into a multi-store establishment, they would need help. Michelle Rinas was a marketing major at the University of Maryland, graduating in 2004. She knew Jamie for several years and had many of the same classes (Jamie was also a marketing major). She was told about the restaurant and immediately hopped on board. The South Street Steaks crew was formed and ready to take over College Park. The three chose to model their restaurant after Jim’s Steaks, where the customers give their orders directly to the cook, and after much deliberation, decided on the name, South Street Steaks (refer back to opening paragraph). They signed a lease on April 18, 2005, taking up the last space in the newly constructed strip mall in downtown College Park known as Terrapin Station. Two and a half months later construction started, and two months after that, in the fall of 2005, the doors officially opened to the public. Initial Public Offering scheduled for June 13, 2011 with franchising opportunities to follow. Check back soon for updates! IPO date subject to change
